CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mr. Spoon, 78, of Charlotte, took his flight to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007. He was born on July 6, 1929 in Charlotte, a son of the late George Alec and Millie Hartsell Spoon. He was also preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.
Bill was the founder and owner of Bill Spoon's Barbecue on South Boulevard, an institution in Charlotte since 1963. He was active in the business everyday until his retirement in 2006, at which time he passed the torch to his grandson, Stephen, who is assisted by grandsons, Justin and Matt.
He served proudly in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Dayton. He was also a 32nd degree Mason, Temple Lodge 676.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marie Spoon; sons, Stephen Ray Spoon and wife, Katherine of Fort Mill and Mark Spoon and wife, Phyllis of Edgemoor; grandchildren, Stephen Ray Spoon Jr. and Kelly Marie Spoon, both of Fort Mill and Justin and Matthew Spoon of Rock Hill.

A service to celebrate Bill's life will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2007 at the Pineville Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Adrian Shepard and the Rev. Dr. John Carson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Ebenezer A.R.P. Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
