JOHNSTON, S.C. -- Services for Mr. James A. Derrick, 85, will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at 4 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1565 Mt. Calvary Road, Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and immediately following the service. Mr. Derrick, a native of Aiken County and husband of the late Jacqueline Cambron Derrick, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at his residence. He was a son of the late Elijah McKelder and Leone Davis Derrick. After attending Clemson University, Mr. Derrick became a tree and asparagus farmer. He also owned and operated Derrick's Hardware, Inc. for 44 years. He was a WWII veteran, where he served as a surgical medic technician for the Army's Airborne Infantry, was a Master Mason of Hampton Lodge for over 50 years and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Derrick also served 24 years as an assistant Explorer Scout Master and was a charter member of the Ridge Spring Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, where he served his church as a Sunday School teacher, Church Council Person, President of the congregation and Treasurer of the church.
He is survived by two daughters, Lillian Bender (Tom) of Rock Hill and Pam Hallman (Bill) of Aiken; two grandchildren, James Bender (Christi) of Bethlehem, Ga., and Kyle Hallman of Aiken; one great-grandson, Korbin Bender; two sisters, Margaret Lee (the late Fitz) and Mary Grandy (Charles), both of Aiken.
The family would like to thank Regency Hospice and the people who helped take special care of Mr. Derrick over the past four years.
