TEGA CAY -- William Richard "Bill" Barrowclough, 67, of 237 Chestnut Ave., Tega Cay, S.C., died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2007, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Bill was born in Paterson, N.J., on Aug. 5, 1940, to the late Arthur Charles and Beatrice Bourne Barrowclough. He was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur "Bud" Barrowclough of Arizona.
After graduating in 1962 from Drew University, Bill served in the Intelligence Field of the United States Army and Army Reserves, and later earned his masters degree, magna cum laude from Montclair State University in New Jersey.
One of Bill's greatest passions in life was the recovering community. He championed many programs to aid in alcohol and drug treatment, holding key positions at New Views Treatment Facility in Morristown, N.J.; Joint Commissions of Alcohol and Drug Treatment in Newberry and Greenwood, S.C.; Lancaster Recovery Center, Lancaster, S.C.; and finally serving as director of the First Step Program at Carolinas Medical Center in Monroe, N.C. Under his direction the facility became a beacon for Behavioral Health Services and proudly honors Bill's commitment to the addict.

The greatest love of his life was his family. There could be no greater husband, father, brother and "Poppa". He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Genny" Smith Barrowclough; his son, BJ and wife, Kristen and their beautiful children, Kerry, Lexi, Sarah, and Joshua of Fort Mill, S.C.; his daughters, Gerie Worthey and husband, Brian and precious grandson Billy of Sharpsburg, Ga., Heather Riley and husband, Warren and wonderful grandson, Tanner and darling granddaughter, Delta of Lake Lure, N.C., Emily Barrowclough of Charlotte, N.C., and Dondi Barrowclough of Boulder, Colo.; his only sister, Marion Willer and husband, Charles (Chuck) of Wayne, N.J.' and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was truly an inspiration to everyone. His courage, honor, and unconditional loving spirit will live in our hearts and minds forever.
Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. A reception will follow at the home of B.J. Barrowclough, 2617 Farmlake Drive, Fort Mill.
