ROCK HILL -- John Martin Boyd, 71, formerly of 1671 Eagles Landing, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Piedmont Medical Center.
A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Boyd was born July 19, 1936, a son of the late John Crawford and Thelma Horne Boyd. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy with 22 years of service, having served in Vietnam, and his last assignment before retirement was as Rock Hill's Navy recruiter. Mr. Boyd also retired from the York County Sheriff Detention Center and was a member of the Rock Hill American Legion Frank Roach Post 34 for over 32 years and a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the VFW. Mr. Boyd also enjoyed serving as a ladies softball coach for nearly 20 years.
Surviving are four daughters, Barbara B. Burns of Rock Hill, Sandy B. Lawson of Rock Hill, Jeanie Correa of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sara Ann Boyd of Rock Hill; one brother, Donald Boyd of Rock Hill; one sister, Evie Arant of Kings Mountain; five grandchildren, Stephanie Hicklin, Katie Wright, Lauren Correa, Melissa Burns and Jonathan Correa; and one great-granddaughter, Gracie Hicklin.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home in Rock Hill.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Florence National Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating and Full Military Honors.
