Helen Jenkins Jackson

YORK -- Helen Jenkins Jackson, 90, was born March 19, 1917 in Rock Hill, S.C., to George Pressley and Martha Riddle Jenkins. After living in Rock Hill, Laurens and Greenwood, the family moved to Charlotte where she went to public schools through Central High School. Her winning smile and engaging conversation from her earliest days meant she was never a stranger. She enjoyed life and brightened the way for others. She was an officer in many of her classes and organizations such as Synod's Council and Assembly Council in Mecklenburg Presbytery, PEO Sisterhood (honored for her 65-years), garden clubs, literary club and church Sunday school and circle. In junior high she was one of 13 of a "Club" with no officers, dues or real duties except hosting meetings. After marrying and leaving Charlotte, she always had "Club" to visit. She loved flowers and flower arranging (doing many for her churches) and was president of her garden club in New Jersey and the Rosa Alba Garden Club in York. She was the first woman to chair the deacons of the Community Church of Mt. Lakes, N.J. She went (two miles walk or sometimes by streetcar) to Queens-Chicora College (now QU of C) where she was May Queen and was graduated in 1938. She met Frederick (Fred) R. Jackson Jr. shortly thereafter, and they were married in 1940 after a two-year romance by mail. They were married in her Presbyterian Church (then Westminster, now Covenant) by the Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana (thus an ecumenical wedding). Their 67+ years of married life were in Pittsfield, Mass., Winston-Salem, N.C., Mountain Lakes, N.J., and York, S.C. They have been members of First Presbyterian Church of York over 20 years.

Helen and (now Dr.) Fred Jackson had three sons and a daughter, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: F. R. Jackson III (Rick or Ray) and partner, Brian Corkum of Portland, Oregon, Robert (Rob) Jackson, wife, Charlotte J. Jackson, daughter, Charlotte Lee (Lee) Jackson of Shelby, N.C., and son, Robert Frederick (Rick) and wife, Dr. Jenny Cheek Jackson of Asheville, N.C.; Laurence (Larry) Rowley Jackson, wife, Daphne T. Jackson, son Larry R. Jackson Jr., wife, Wendy, daughter, Abigail and son, L. R. (Rowley) Jackson III; daughter, Lori Jackson Jayne, husband, Eric, daughter, Ashley and son, Thomas, all of Columbia, Md., and daughter, Kathleen and husband, Bryan Richardson of Baltimore, Md.; and daughter, Mary Jackson Medlin, husband, Dr. Charles E. Medlin of York, S.C. She had two brothers-in-law, Franklin R. Jackson (wife, Marty) of Charlotte, N.C., and Harold M. Jackson (wife, Mary) of Hendersonville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her brothers, George and Robert Jenkins and sister, Betty Jenkins Williams.
