Marvin Leo Short

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Marvin Leo Short, 85, of Charlotte, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy.

He was born Jan. 12, 1923 in Bessemer City and was the son of the late Elizabeth Wells Short and Charles Short.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, something he was very proud of. Marvin was the sales manager for Holsom Bakery for many years in Rock Hill, S.C., and was fondly known as "the Breadman". In later years he worked as a realtor for Bryant Realty in Charlotte.

He was an avid bowler all his life and was a mentor for many people in the AA program in Charlotte. Marvin was a wonderful friend and truly loved everybody. He had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger. Marvin was a sweet man and is dearly loved by his family

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette Whaley Short; his daughters, Joyce Simpson, Peggy Buss, Bobbie Sue Chewning and Freida Short; step-daughter Linda Carter; and stepson Edward Manley; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grand children; and his brother, Charlie Short.

A service to celebrate his life will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church, 4012 Central Ave., Charlotte, with the Rev. David Wyatt and the Rev. Ron Riley officiating. Marvin's family will receive friends at the church on Monday Feb. 4, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m.
