CATAWBA -- James Lafayette Evans Sr., 76, of 1021 Rainbow Circle, went home to be with his Lord on Feb. 11, 2008.
A native of Whitmire, S.C., Mr. Evans was born June 7, 1931, a son of the late James L. and Nina Frazier Evans. He was owner and operator of Evans Grading Service, a U.S. Navy veteran and member of Providence Baptist Church. Mr. Evans was a loving husband, father and Paw Paw and will be remembered for his giving spirit and willingness to help others. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Blackmon Evans; three brothers, Clarence and Albert Evans and Frank McClellan; and two sisters, Ethel Beck and Lillian Gregory.
Surviving are three sons, James L. Evans Jr. of Richburg and Kenneth D. Evans Sr., and Douglas Glen Evans, both of Rock Hill; two daughters, Deborah Faye Evans and Cathy Winn both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Jeanette Anderson and Betty Freeman, both of Rock Hill; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Evans will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, with Dr. Larry Twitty and the Rev. R. B. Ashley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Micah, Jonathan, Benjamin Winn, Colby Evans, Kenneth Evans Jr., Jackie Bailey, Matt Evans and Travis Robinson.
