COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Mr. Richardson died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, in Lexington Medical Center, Columbia, S.C. He was born Feb. 7, 1933 in Charlotte, N.C., son of the late A.O. "Buster" Richardson and Ruth Thomas Richardson.
Dick attended local schools in Charlotte and owned several successful wholesale lighting businesses in Charlotte for many years and served on the Board of Directors of First Trust Bank. Mr. Richardson also served as a reserve officer with the Charlotte Police Department from 1960 through the mid 80's. He was involved in youth sports, serving as Southeast Regional Director for Babe Ruth Baseball and had a positive influence on the lives of many young men through his coaching and sponsorship of youth baseball programs in the Charlotte area.
Mr. Richardson was appointed by Governor Carrol Campbell under his administration to the South Carolina Agency Head Salary Review Commission and was the former Chairman of the York County, South Carolina Planning and Zoning Commission.
Dick was a member of the Excelsior No. 261 Masonic Lodge Temple in Charlotte, Scottish Rite Bodies (Valley of Charlotte) and the Oasis Shriners in Charlotte.

A unique one-of-a-kind personality, he knew how to grab the tiger's tail and shake it. Admired, chastised, envied, challenged, appreciated, loved. All these words apply. Often bigger than life, he met life head-on, and gave those privileged to know him something strong to remember.
Dick is survived by his wife, The Honorable Rebecca Meacham Richardson of Lake Wylie, SC; daughter, Deborah R. Matney and her husband, Jack of Myrtle Beach; son, J. Michael Richardson and his wife, Melinda of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers, William L. Richardson of Texas and Harry O. Richardson of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Patricia R. Holder and husband, Ernest of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughters, Lauren, Kathryn, and Cameron Richardson and Ali Creed. Also surviving are step-sons, William Layman Meacham and his wife, Seanna of Columbia and James Brennan Meacham of Seattle, Wash.
Dick will be missed by many special friends, the political arena, nieces and nephews who will treasure their memories of him.
Funeral service for Mr. Richardson will be held Monday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
