FORT MILL -- James R. Johnston, 92, of Fort Mill, S.C., passed away Feb. 21, 2008.
He was born in Homestead, Pa., and graduated from Munhall High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Joan Hahn, and together they celebrated their 66th anniversary Aug. 15. Jim was retired from Metal Improvement Company, where he established their plant in Pineville, N.C. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Merchant Marine in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. Jim was a life member of the Syria Shriners, the American Legion, a 50 year member of the Free Masons, a long time member of Fort Mill Country Club and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Mill. After Jim's retirement, he and Helen enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states, several countries in Europe and the Orient. He was an avid golfer, playing to a 9 handicap, and enjoyed gardening in his later years.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; their three children - daughter, Judith Lee of Providence Forge, Va., son, James Robert and wife, Jacqueline of Newnan, Ga., and son Frederick Hahn and wife, Janice of Easton, Md.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
At Jim's request, his remains were donated to the VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Methodist Church in Fort Mill on March 15 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.
