ROCK HILL -- Mr. Roy Cecil Chapman, 89, of 2003 Hopewell Road, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
A native of Rock Hill, Cecil was a son of the late Thomas Lloyd and Clara Crenshaw Chapman. He was a lifelong member of Friendship UMC, where he was active for many years through his singing in the choir and assisting with various youth programs at the church. Cecil graduated from Rock Hill High School, where he served as captain of the football team and earned a scholarship to Erskine College, where he played until a knee injury shortened his playing career. He worked various jobs in the Rock Hill area having worked at Marshal Oil Company and the R.C. Cola Plant before becoming an Environmental Tech at Celanese, where he retired with over 30 years of service. He also worked as a volunteer at Piedmont Medical Center following his Celanese retirement.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday March 8, 2008, at Friendship United Methodist Church, with Pastor George Schultz officiating and the Rev. Mike Vandiver and Pastor Matthew James assisting. Burial will follow in Laurelwood Cemetery.
Mr. Chapman is survived by his wife, Cynthia Matthews Chapman of the home; two sons, W. Bruce Chapman and wife, Brenda of Rock Hill and Roger B. Chapman and wife, Martha of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and his niece, Yvonna Chapman Mayse of Flat Rock, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today, March 7, 2008, at Greene Funeral Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 and other times at the home of Bruce and Brenda Chapman, 2021 Hopewell Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
