FORT MILL -- Mr. Thomas Lee "Buddy" Bird Jr., 83, of 2638 Gabriel Court, Fort Mill, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Park Point Village in Rock Hill.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the church chapel, with the Rev. John Williams Jr., the Rev. Jeff Bedwell, the Rev. Ralph Riley and the Rev. Benny Wade officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C.
Born December 3, 1924 in Charlotte, N.C., Mr. Bird was a son of the late Thomas Lee Bird Sr. and Sadie Duncan Bird. He was a graduate of Central High School in Charlotte and attended Carolina Business College. During World War II, he served as a Pharmacist Mate 1/C in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean and Japan. Mr. Bird was a past commander and a member of the V.F.W. Post 4059 in Mint Hill, N.C., the Eli Bailes American Legion Post 43 and the Catawba Masonic Lodge 56. He was retired from Johnson Motor Lines and Bank of America. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Bird loved music and was a former member of the Senior Adult Choir. He taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Josephine Williams Bird; his son, Thomas "Tommy" Bird III and his wife, Joy, of Salem, Va.; his sister, Dorothy Bird Williams of Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Bird and Wesley Adam Bird. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bird was preceded in death by a brother, John C. Bird; and three sisters, Sarah B. Martin, Ann B. Kiser and Frances B. Oviatt.
