WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- William D. Hammond, 91, passed away Saturday evening, March 29, 2008, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit.
Mr. Hammond was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Heath Springs, S.C., to Ernest W. and Elizabeth Mackey Hammond. His family moved to Clover, S.C., in 1932. He was a graduate of Clover High School and veteran of World War II, serving in England with the Eighth Air Force. Mr. Hammond was a member of First Baptist Church in Clover. He was a merchant and farmer. He owned Hammond Grocery and Clover Food Center.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rachel Windell Hammond in 1999. He is survived by two sons, Daniel Hammond and his wife, Claire, of Winston-Salem and Kent Hammond and his special friend, Jeannie Gorman, of Easley, S.C.; three grandchildren, Joseph Hammond and fiancé, Normalinda Gonzalez of New York, N.Y., Patrick Hammond of New York and Jane Hammond of Winston-Salem; his nephew, Ron Wallace and wife, Dianne Wallace, of Clover; along with many other loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Woodside Cemetery in Clover, with the Rev. David Stanford officiating. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. prior to the service at First Baptist Church, Clover.
