CHARLOTTE -- Charles Edmund Longworth, 93, of the Carriage Club in Charlotte, formerly of Tega Cay, S.C., passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008. He was born March 7, 1915, one of eight children of Charles W. and Fannie Longworth of Winston-Salem.
Ed is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart Louise Hurst Longworth. They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary this year. He is also survived by his brother, James and his wife, Charlotte, also of the Carriage Club.
He was devoted to his family, especially nieces and nephews Michael, Douglas, Susan, Bill, Linwood, Don, Wagner, John and Voigt Hurst, Jim Longworth Jr., Faye Kimball, Judy Walker, and Linda Couch. He was especially proud of his godchildren Chad and Courtney Martin. His long-time personal assistant, Sheila Baugh, remained a constant support.
Ed was founder and president of Pilot Brokerage Company until his retirement in the early 1970s. A former member of Myers Park Country Club, he was an enthusiastic golfer. He was also an avid sports fan. The staff at the Carriage Club knew they could count on him for the latest scores, especially if his beloved Tar Heels were playing.
He was a lifelong member of the Baptist faith, but for eight years led a men's Bible study class at the Moravian Little Church on the Lane.
A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Howard Chadwick on Wednesday, June 18, at 2 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel of Sharon Memorial Park. The visitation and reception will follow at the Carriage Club, 5800 Old Providence Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
