CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Jean Holroyd Hoyle, 80, of Chapel Hill, N.C., died Monday, May 26, 2008, after a six-month-long illness. She was born in Newberry, S.C., to the Rev. Raymond Lee Holroyd and Maggie Rae Anderson Holroyd. She spent her youth in various towns in South Carolina, a state that was always home to her no matter where she lived.
Jean attended Rock Hill High School in Rock Hill, S.C., graduated from Columbia College in Columbia, S.C., and attended graduate school at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. She taught school in South Carolina and then in North Carolina after her marriage to the Rev. John William "Bill" Hoyle III. While she was known as a strict teacher, her students loved and respected her. Her involvement was lifelong in the United Methodist Church. Most of her adult life she served as a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Granite Quarry, NC. She taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was active in United Methodist Women, serving as president in 1965.
She is survived by her three daughters, Lucy Sency of Chapel Hill, Betty Hoyle Rudo and her husband, Dr. Ken Rudo, of Chapel Hill and Margaret McKenzie and her husband, Ken McKenzie, of Salisbury, N.C. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, whom she dearly loved. Jean will be greatly missed by her immediate and extended families, and her wide-reaching family of friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her former husband; her two sisters, Margaret Holroyd and Betty Hammond; and her two brothers, Raymond Lee Holroyd Jr. and Robert Holroyd.

A brief burial service will be held at Philadelphia United Methodist Church in York, S.C., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Later that afternoon at 3 p.m., a memorial service and reception will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Granite Quarry, N.C.
