MARIETTA, Ga. -- Martha G. Samuel, a former resident of Anderson, Rock Hill and Hilton Head Island, S.C., passed away suddenly on June 29, 2008, at the age of 81.
She was born Martha Ellen Glenn on Oct. 21, 1926, in Anderson, S.C., to Ora Jane Browne Glenn and William Keith Glenn Sr. She grew up in Anderson and was a graduate of Hanna Girls' High and Anderson College. She was a legal secretary with the law firm of Watkins and Prince in Anderson and later was the secretary to Samuel L. Prince, Dean of the Law School of the University of South Carolina.
She was married three times: to T. Hugh Simrill Jr., from whom she was divorced; to Donald Ross Beal, who preceded her in death and to John Emlyn Samuel, who preceded her in death.
She was secretary to Senior Pastor Dr. John M. Miller of First Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head Island for 12 years, retiring in 1989.

She and husband, John Samuel were active members of First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island until their move to Parc at Piedmont in Marietta, Ga., in 2006. They had previously been residents of TidePointe on Hilton Head Island.
Surviving are her two children, Thomas Hugh Simrill III of Acworth, Ga., and Browne Glenn Simrill of Yulee, Fla.; two grandchildren, Thomas Hugh Simrill IV and Jackson Glenn Simrill; seven stepchildren, Barbara Ann Schindler of Carthage, N.C., Theodore Joseph Samuel of Dallas, Texas, Sydney Lee Bland of Travelers Rest, S.C., Cynthia Kay Johnson of Kennesaw, Ga., Bradford Stuart Samuel of Beaufort, S.C., D. Ross Beal of California and Cynthia Beal France of Michigan; eight stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
Mrs. Samuel was the youngest of nine children: Preceding her in death were Marguerite Elizabeth Glenn, William Henry Glenn, Cynthia Elfreida G. Marchbanks, Newton Browne Glenn, William Keith Glenn Jr. and Ora Ann G. Gault. Surviving siblings are Robert McPherson Glenn of Pensacola, Fla., and George Rembert Glenn of Augusta, Ga. Also surviving are beloved nieces and nephews.
A private committal service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church columbarium. A memorial service will be held at TidePointe, Hilton Head Island on July 18, 2008, at 11:30 AM. The Rev. Dr. John M. Miller will officiate and a reception will immediately follow the service.
Martha loved her family with all her heart and will be missed by all.
