ROCK HILL -- Mr. Gene Autry Edwards Sr., of 313 Maple St., died Aug. 15, 2008 at his home.
Celebration of life services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008 at Mount Zion AME Zion Church No. 1, with Pastor Sandra Sistare presiding, Bishop Billy R. Wilson officiating and the Rev. Jimmy Alexander and the Rev. Dr. Ralph Washington assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, S.C., he was the son of Margaret Heath Edwards Gayten and the late Jimmy W. Edwards. He was a member of Mount Zion AME Zion Church No. 1 in Catawba, S.C. He graduated from Emmett Scott High School in 1965 and worked as a concrete finisher.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret Edwards Gayten of the home; stepfather, Leonard Gayten of Rock Hill, S.C.; five sons, Fitzgerald Hinton, Gene A. Edwards Jr., Derrick D. Edwards, Shawn Beaty and James W. Jones, III, all of Rock Hill; four daughters, Yolanda M. Edwards of Charlotte, N.C., Tonya Evans of Gastonia, N.C., Joy S. Edwards and Alisha Bennett, both of Rock Hill; sister, Patricia Ferguson of Rock Hill; two uncles, Pastor Leonard W. Edwards of Charlotte and Parker W. Edwards of Baltimore, Md.; six cousins whom he was reared with as sisters and brothers, Beatrice Heath of Columbia, S.C., Margaret H. Cloud, Dianne Heath, Charles Heath and Ricky Heath, all of Rock Hill and Betty Green of Philadelphia, Pa.; special friend, Mary J. Edwards of Rock Hill; and 13 grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 19, 2008, at King Funeral Home - Chris King Memorial Chapel, 331 East Main St., Rock Hill. The family will receive friends at the home of Joy and Mary Edwards, 848 South Confederate Ave., Rock Hill.
