TEGA CAY -- Mrs. Betty Young Buckner, 78, beloved wife, mother and sister, took her final flight to the west peacefully in her sleep in the comfort of her home in Tega Cay, S.C.
A daughter of the late Henry Young Sr. and Vivian Esther Mullins Young, Betty was born in Malden, W.Va., on July 9, 1930. She was a life-long resident of Belle, W.Va. She had just moved to S.C., on August 14, 2008, to be near her daughter.
She was a 1950 graduate of DuPont High School. She was a former employee of OJ Morrison's, where she met her future husband. Betty also managed a Hallmark Card Shop in Charleston, W.Va.
Betty led a Christian life from childhood, being an inspiration to all who knew her. She sang lead soprano at Farrah Baptist Church, where she was also youth choir leader. She had the voice of an angel and loved to sing. She was a member of Esta Baptist Church.

Her greatest joys in life were her family, although she was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Betty loved poetry writing, several that won awards. She loved the outdoors, and all God's creations, especially birds and her dog, Boulder.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Paxton and son-in-law, Beau Fields.
Betty is survived by her husband of 54 years, Darrell of Tega Cay and the most precious gift in her life, her daughter, Colleen Buckner-Fields, also of Tega Cay. Also surviving are two brothers, Ron Young of Baltimore, Md., Henry (Donna) Young Jr. of Handley, W.Va.; sisters, Janice (Lester) Cummings of Poca, W.Va., Nada (Carl) Spitzer of Augusta, Ga., Jeannie (Clinton) Hoy of Witcher and a brother-in-law, Richard Paxton of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; plus 14 nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her extra special cousins by marriage, Diann and Jerry Jessie of Witcher.
My father and I would like to thank Dr. Glenn Goldfarb and Kathy for their faithful support over the years and Dr.Greg Collins of Charlotte, N.C., for his kindness and compassion for Betty. We would also like to thank her hospice angels, Rhonda and Frankie, that God sent to us at the end. We also appreciate Hospice Spiritual Director, Lee Dye.
A memorial service to celebrate Betty's life was held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2008, at Witcher Baptist Church. The service was conducted by the Rev. Kenny Townsend.
