CHESTER -- Mr. Heyward Hemphill Gourley, 89, of 627 Stamie Drive died Oct. 16, 2008, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Chester Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Clint Davis and Dr. Dwight Pearson officiating. Burial will be in Chester Memorial Gardens.
Born in Sharon, S.C., Feb. 3, 1919, Mr. Gourley was a son of the late James Paul and Leila Jane Sherer Gourley. He was a graduate of Sharon High School, veteran of the U.S. Air Force during WWII and a retired Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was a member of Chester ARP Church for over 50 years, where he was a Deacon and Elder. He was an avid gardener claiming tomatoes as his specialty and he also enjoyed weekly golfing outings with his family and friends. Mr. Gourley was the widower of Grace McCallum Gourley.
Surviving are his son, Steve Gourley of Chester, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Amy Perry and her husband, Shane, of Greenville, S.C., and Brooke Gourley of Greenwood, S.C. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy "J.R." Gourley.
