UNION -- Mr. Harry A. Orr, 73, of 2200 Lockhart Highway, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Mary Black Hospital, after a brief illness.
Mr. Orr was born in Union, S.C., Aug. 26, 1935, a son of the late Arthur and Dorothy Moore Orr. He was a graduate of Union High School and Mars Hill College, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He also graduated from Newberry College with a master's degree in English Literature and did post graduate Studies at Auburn University. Mr. Orr was a retired educator having taught in the Manning and Rock Hill School Systems and Winthrop University. Before retirement, Mr. Orr taught at the Union County Adult Education. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, where he served as organist for several years. Mr. Orr served as past President of the South Carolina Teachers Association and was also a faithful member of the Union County Council on Aging.
Surviving are a son, Harry A. "Jay" Orr Jr. of the home; two sisters, Jackie Orr Davis and husband, Bobby, of Union and Trudy Orr Jolly and husband, R.H. of Brandon, Fla.; a brother, Joe D. Orr and wife, Joanne, of Marathon, Fla.; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Orr of Union; a special niece, "Bailey Bug" and several other nieces and nephews; and a loving pet companion, a Chihuahua, " Peanut".
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon.
Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
