Hughie Peterson

SUMMERTON -- Hughie Peterson Sr., 85, widower of Carrie Leverta Evans Peterson, died Dec. 2, 2008, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton, S.C.

Born Oct. 8, 1923, in Alcolu, S.C., he was a son of the late Robert Peterson and Willie Bess McFadden Peterson. He received his formal education at Nebo Grade School. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Harmony Presbyterian Church, were he served as a deacon and elder. For 70 years he was a barber and 27 years he worked at Georgia Pacific Company.

Survivors are two sons, Hughi (Brenda) Peterson Jr. of Orangeburg, S.C., and Norman (Verlinda) Peterson of Alcolu, S.C.; two daughters, Odell (Allen) Hammett Jr. of Alcolu, S.C., and Verta (Luther) McCree of Rock Hill, S.C.; two brothers, Hiawatha Peterson of New York and Roosevelt Peterson of Connecticut; three sisters, Kate L. English of New York, Daisy P.Arnold of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mary Lou Hickman of Alcolu, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Remains will be placed in the church at noon Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Harmony Presbyterian Church, Highway 301 North, Alcolu, S.C., with the Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating and the Revs. James S. Hudley and Henry O.Blackwell assisting. Burial will be at Westminister Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Odell and Allen Hammett Sr., 1180 Ridge Drive, Alcolu, S.C.
