ROCK HILL -- Wylene McLurkin Wylie, 80, of 1925 Welborn Street, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Piedmont Medical Center after a long illness.
A Celebration of Life graveside service will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Evergreen Cemetery, Chester, S.C., with the Rev. Jim Richardson officiating.
Mrs. Wylie was born Oct. 20, 1928, in Chester and was the daughter of the late Samuel William and Eloise Wylie McLurkin. She was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel McLurkin Jr. She graduated from Chester High School and Winthrop College with a degree in chemistry.
Following her graduation in 1949, she joined Celanese Fibers Co., as a chemist at the Celriver plant, later serving as the main laboratory supervisor, data processing and statistical service supervisor and quality control engineer. In 1971, she transferred to Celanese Fibers Marketing Company in Charlotte, N.C., and in 1976 was named manager, Product Performance-Celanese Fiber Company Products.

Wylene served on the executive board of the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC), chairman of the Chemical Division Council, and was named an ASQC Fellow in 1979. In 1989, the United States Department of Commerce recognized her with a certificate of appreciation for outstanding service to the nation as a member of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Examiners. In 1992, after 43 years of service, she retired from Celanese.
Mrs. Wylie is survived by her husband of 52 years, William "Bill" Wylie; her aunt, Mrs. Mary Stokes of Orangeburg, S.C.; nephew, Tres' McLurkin and his wife, Jenna; great-niece, Kenna McLurkin; and sister-in-law, Wanda McLurkin, all of Raleigh, N.C.; and sister-in-law, Polly Ford of Rock Hill.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1925 Welborn Street, Rock Hill.
