Doris June Thompson Dickey, 80, of Bristol, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, in Hermitage Healthcare Center in Elizabethton, Tenn. She was born June 1, 1929, in Appalachia, Va., to the late Miles and Margaret Coomer Thompson and was the widow of Ernest H. Dickey Jr. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. She moved to Bristol in the late 1940's, worked for the phone company and was very active in scouting, Border Guild, and hosted numerous foreign exchange students from all over the world. She received the Good Shepherd award for her active role in scouting. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Bristol, Va., where she assisted with the nursery.
Survivors include her sons, Frank Douglass Dickey and wife, Pat, of Montgomery Village, Md., and Ernest Martin Dickey and wife, Connie, of Fort Mill, S.C.; grandchildren, Matthew Dickey and wife, Katie, Benjamin Dickey and Jason Dickey; sister-in-law, Eleanor Heacock and husband, Jack; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2009, in the Heritage Chapel of Memories at Mountain View Cemetery, with Dr. David Stancil officiating.
