Mr. Roy Edwin Wilkerson, 79, of Hickory Grove died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at his home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry Hyder officiating and Dr. William E. Suttles assisting. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Roy was born July 25, 1930, in Hickory Grove, to W.B. and Ora Inman Wilkerson. He was the seventh of nine children and was the youngest of three boys. He graduated in 1951 from Clemson College with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He served in the Korean Conflict as a tank commander and still got emotional when showing slides that he made while talking to his family of the children there who were so starved for food and attention. Roy married Geraldine Carroll on March 6, 1955, that same year he joined his father working in the insurance business.
In 1962, he became owner of Boney Insurance Office in York, upon his father's retirement. Roy was former York Chamber of Commerce President, Chairman of Divine Savior Hospital Board of Directors and since 1969, he has served on the Board of Directors for York Electric Co-op Inc. He was a member of the Sharon Palmetto Lodge, Hejaz Shriners, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Order of Easter Star. Roy was also a past Jaycee, receiving an award as Outstanding Jaycee Project Chairman of the Year for the United Way Fund Drive. He was past president of the York Rotary Club receiving Rotary's highest honor as Paul Harris Fellows. He was a trustee of York General Hospital, past recipient of the Distinguished Service Award and was honored by York Chamber of Commerce as “Small Business of the Year.” He was selected by the festival board and named “Duke of York” in 1992 serving as host to a crowd of 40,000 plus to all Summerfest goers. He was an active member and Sunday School teacher at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and served in various capacities on committees and boards throughout the church for many years.
Roy also served as President of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company from 1993 to the present and served as secretary/treasurer of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. Roy retired from the insurance business in 1992, turning his business over to his son-in-law, William Mitchell, although Roy continued to report to work everyday. He also served on the Bank of York board of directors, was a past chairman of The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, and was awarded The Order of the Silver Crescent.
Roy is survived by his wife, Geraldine Carroll Wilkerson; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and William Mitchell of York; grandchildren, Will Mitchell and Allison Mitchell; great-grandson, Driggs Mitchell; and sister, Rebekah Littlejohn.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church
