A Fort Mill man who authorities believe unintentionally shot himself in the head after robbing a home in Lancaster on Wednesday night has died, York County coroner Sabrina Gast said.
Larry Joe Smith, 29, was one of two men who, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff's report, went to an Indian Land home Wednesday to buy marijuana. The report says that Smith and another man walked up to the home's sliding glass door and asked to come in.
The robbery victim told deputies that when he opened the door, the men punched him repeatedly before stealing several things, the report states.
Smith and the other man left in a car with four other people, York County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Mike Baker said.
Around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, sheriff's deputies were called to Hensley Road in Fort Mill where they found Smith slumped over in a car, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. A handgun lay at his feet.
Three other people were in the car, according to a report. None was charged.
Smith was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where Gast said he died late Thursday night.
It's not clear why Smith would've shot himself, Baker said.
Investigators suspect it was an accident.
"We have nothing that leads us to believe it was anything other than self-inflicted," Baker said. "It would be our assumption that he didn't realize it was loaded.
"It's hard to imagine someone doing that, but we're still investigating. We haven't ruled anything out."
One suspect has been arrested in connection with the Indian Land robbery, said Maj. David Belk, Lancaster County Sheriff Office spokesman.
Belk wouldn't elaborate but said the investigation is ongoing.
