Winthrop tennis teams prep for tourney

The men's and women's tennis teams are gearing up for the Big South tournament that gets underway Thursday in Radford, Va. The men's team has the No. 2 seed and plays No. 7 Presbyterian. The women's team is also seeded No. 2 and will play Liberty in the opening round.

On the men's side, Radford is the top seed. Charleston Southern is No. 1 in the women's bracket. The entire tournament will be played at Radford with the championship matches being held on Saturday.

The Winthrop men finished the regular season 10-11 overall and 5-1 in the Big South, Liran Levy and Nadav Ruppin both went 5-1 in conference singles matches. Ruppin and Guy Kubi paired up to go unbeaten in Big South doubles action.

The Lady Eagles enter the conference tournament with a 13-8 overall record and a 6-1 mark in Big South matches. They have won seven consecutive matches after losing at home to Charleston Southern on March 20.

Sandra Herrera and Lisa Wilkinson went 7-0 in conference, Sara Abutovic was 4-0. The team won every doubles match this season (21-0) in seven Big South contests.

ON THE TUBE -- Winthrop athletics will have two televised events this weekend. Friday's 4:30 p.m. baseball game against Radford will be on ESPNU. The game will be called by Mike Gleason and Leland Maddox.

Sunday's 2 p.m. softball game against Radford will also be on ESPNU. Gleason will handle the play-by-play with analyst Cindy Bristol.

BASEBALL -- Winthrop (18-17) has won five of its past six games including five straight Big South contests. They are tied for fourth in the conference with a 6-6 mark.

20 GAMES TO GO -- Here's the breakdown on the Eagles' remaining regular season games: 12 at home and eight on the road; 12 Big South games, six at home. Winthrop hosts the Big South tournament May 25-29.

WHO'S HOT -- Shortstop Adam Gliebe has a 10-game hitting streak. The junior transfer from St. Louis is 19-for-43 (.442) during the span with 11 RBIs. Center fielder Tyler McBride has a modest (9-for-29, .311) six-game streak going at the plate.

Pitcher Matteo D'Angelo has gone eight innings in each of his last two starts. He is 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in those starts with 11 strikeouts and four walks. He ranks third in the Big South with 57 1-3 innings pitched. Robert Lake is fifth in the same category. He has worked 55 1-3.

POWER OUTAGE -- Eddie Rohan is third in the league with nine home runs and has a five game hitting streak (7-for-20) but he hasn't homered since March 30 at North Carolina. The 11-game drought covers his last 42 at-bats.

NOT THAT RUTH -- Freshman relief pitcher Eric Ruth (1-0, 4.43 ERA) has become a dependable arm for the Eagles. He has appeared in 17 games and has struck out 17 in 20 1-3 innings.

SPREADING OUT THE SAVES -- Sophomore Tyler Mizenko (1-3, 5.24 ERA) hasn't factored into the team's last two save opportunities. Those went to Greg Hough and Tommy Lawrence. Mizenko set the school record for saves with 14 last season. He has three to date.

SOFTBALL -- Coach Mark Cooke's team is 3-7 in their last 10 games and 3-5 in their last eight Big South contests. At 23-18 overall and 6-5 in the conference they find themselves in third place in the Big South.

11 GAMES TO GO -- Here's the breakdown on the Eagles' remaining regular season games: Eight at home and three on the road; six Big South games, all at home; four non-conference contests. The Big South Conference tournament is at Coastal Carolina May 13-15.

WHO'S HOT -- Senior pitchers Cari Wooldridge and Megan Evans own the top two spots in the Big South for ERA. Wooldridge is 13-10 with a league-best 1.91 ERA. Evans is 9-6 with a 2.31.
