The Panthers eclipsed their season scoring average (10.4) with John Kasay's 55-yard field goal early in the third. That gave them a 13-10 edge, their first lead at home all year.
They also knocked 49ers QB Alex Smith out of the game, putting Carr in charge. He was wearing no gloves, but otherwise looked like the guy who went 1-3 here as the starter in 2007.
Smith suffered a shoulder sprain when sacked by Panthers DE Charles Johnson.
Panthers WR Steve Smith left with leg cramps, and then cramped their style when he came back. He killed a chance to add to the lead with a personal foul and a fumble.
The 49ers are about to line up for a field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter.
