Bryan Coburn's blogging.
As South Carolina's Teacher of the Year, the Northwestern High educator will spend the next school year traveling around the state.
You can keep up with him at Bryan's Blog.
Coburn's the third Teacher of the Year to chronicle the experience online.
In his welcome post, Coburn writes:
You will not be reading flowing prose in the literary style of (former Teacher of the Year) Jenna Hallman. You will get succinct musings instead. ... Hopefully you will grow accustomed to my sardonic wit and unusual take.
Coburn has updated his blog pretty regularly since May 18 (which is more than can be said of The Herald's After Class blog -- but we're working on that.)
Here's a sample from July 17:
Some children and skill sets are ignored by an educational system that believes that the only key is a four year math-science degree. Don’t believe me?… let your air conditioner stop in August and who are you going to call … your local Ph.D. in Advanced Euclidian Geometry or Political Science … or that student with short, dirty nails and an HVAC certification? I have seen many people in my life with advanced degrees who could not replace a simple wall outlet.
All our students are special, we just have to find out where they excel.
