Dolphins coach Tony Sparano just confirmed that RB Ronnie Brown won't play Thursday against the Panthers, per quotes distributed by the Dolphins.
While there's a sigh of relief there for the Panthers, it's not so simple.
For one thing, several players said Tuesday they expect the Dolphins to run much of the same offense even without the dynamic Brown. QB Jake Delhomme said he thinks RB Ricky Williams is "one of the smartest players I've ever played with, at any position."
Throw in QB Pat White, and they have the possibility to do some things the Panthers haven't seen.
Considering Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning was fired by the Panthers after the 2006 season, some of those new things might be called with relish.
-- The Panthers were without four players for practice Tuesday: DE Charles Johnson, FB Brad Hoover, FS Charles Godfrey and RB Jonathan Stewart. DT Damione Lewis was limited.
-- They promoted WR Charly Martin from the practice squad to replace LT Jordan Gross (who went on IR).
That's as much of a special teams move at this point as anything. The Panthers haven't had a WR contribute in the kicking game in some time, and Martin's a more physical presence than Kenny Moore.
But don't sleep on this kid. He had a great camp with the Chargers, and many there thought he should have made the team.
