If the Panthers are looking for someone to challenge Matt Moore for the starting QB job, the search is apparently going to take some time.
With Cleveland's Brady Quinn shipped to Denver Sunday -- for FB Peyton Hillis and two conditional draft picks, per Fox's Jay Glazer -- another potential option was crossed off the list. It's unclear whether the Panthers ever showed any interest in Quinn, his trade at least dilutes the pool a little more.
The Panthers don't seem to be in the mix for Derek Anderson, who's scheduled visits with Seattle and Arizona. Those same two are negotiating with San Diego backup Charlie Whitehurst.
So if Carolina's thinking about trading for someone, it's hard to imagine who the target would be. Miami's Tyler Thigpen's a guy they've shown interest in before, but the Dolphins apparently want to keep him as the second, behind Chad Henne and ahead of vet Chad Pennington and gimmick Pat White.
Simply put, there's not an option in free agency better than Josh McCown, who sounds like their fall-back plan. Not sure they'd let him compete with Moore now, but when they competed for the second job last year, McCown won it.
At this point, their best chance at upgrading may come after the draft, when teams find future solutions and may look to move veterans out of the way.
