In front of the community that he dedicated his life to, former Rock Hill basketball coach Robert Hope was honored in an emotional ceremony during the Bearcats' home opener Tuesday night. And, on this special night, the Bearcats' teams sent their fans home happy, winning both contests against the Lewisville Lions.
The first varsity game of the evening was between the Lady Lions and Bearcats, which quickly spiraled into a lopsided contest.
The Lady Lions managed just four points - all scored by senior Brittany Walls during the first period. The Bearcats were led by Ze'kiya Knox, who netted 16 points on an impressive 7-of-9 shooting night. Her teammates followed suit via numerous high-percentage shots in the paint.
Hope was honored at the start of the varsity boys game, and the contest that followed was a more competitive affair.
Cortell Busby, the Lions' floor general and offensive catalyst, got his team off to a quick start and finished the game with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
However, the Bearcats' front-court length and ball distribution proved to be the difference. Nine Bearcats players finished with at least one basket. Senior guard William Killian finished with a team-high 14 points. Center Matthew Harvey, at 6 feet, 8 inches, was a formidable presence in the paint, blocking three shots and forcing the Lions into several uncomfortable shots and turnovers.
Rock Hill improves to 2-0 on the season.
