Northwestern weathered a poor shooting night, but managed to slip past visiting Lancaster 41-29 on Tuesday in a Region 3-AAAA matchup.
Sha'shay Alexander led Northwestern with 12 points. Xy'Resha Isom added 8.
The Trojans and Bruins struggled mightily in the first half as neither team seemed to be able to get into any rhythm. Northwestern coach John Bramlett subbed out his entire lineup six times in the first half trying to put a group on the floor that could spark his offense.
"We do that because we are so deep," he said. "We're so athletic and our strength is in our guards and we think we can tire the other team out and cause them to make some bad decisions."
He adds that the frequent rotation keeps his young team focused on the game. The Trojans roster boasts 8 players that are underclassmen.
Northwestern held a narrow 16-15 lead at the half after shooting a mere 6-for-37 (16 percent) compared to Lancaster's 5-for-15 (33 percent).
Northwestern shook off an abysmal first half and settled down in third quarter and exploded for 16 points in the quarter. The Trojans started the quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 23-15 lead just 3:23 into the half.
Lancaster seemed troubled by the Trojans defense.
The Bruins only made two field goals in the second half and coughed up 24 turnovers in the game. Northwestern didn't exactly protect the ball as the Trojans finished with 27 turnovers.
The Trojans' youth was evident on the offensive end. Northwestern finished the game 13-for-65 (20 percent), but went 5-of-10 from the foul line in the final 3:43 to hold off the Bruins.
Lancaster used a 9-4 run to open the fourth to draw within 8 at 37-29, but the Bruins failed to score the rest of the way. Isom went 4-for-6 from the line to close out the game in the final 1:31.
Shannon Truesdale led the Bruins with 12 after going 10-for-18 from the foul line.
