Winthrop had everything fall in place in Wednesday's win at The Citadel. This weekend, the Eagles look forward to opening Big South baseball action at home with a three-game series against VMI.
The Eagles picked up a 3-1 win at The Citadel to snap a three-game losing streak. In the process, Winthrop coach Tom Riginos was able to find some innings for his pitchers who missed opportunities to throw due to a pair of rainouts.
Dom Patterozzi threw two scoreless innings in his first start of the season. Matteo D'Angelo (2-2) tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win. Robert Lake worked through a 10-pitch inning of relief. Eric Ruth struck out three in two innings, and Tommy Lawrence picked up his third save of the year.
Lake and D'Angelo will start Saturday and Sunday, respectively, against VMI. Tyler Mizenko will get the nod in tonight's series opener at 6.
The Eagles' trio of weekend starters will try to slow senior shortstop Sam Roberts who was named Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 21-27. He comes into the series leading the Keydets in hitting (.359), runs scored, walks and stolen bases.
Roberts does it all from the top of the batting order where he became the second player in VMI history to record 50-plus runs and RBIs last season.
Roberts has hit in 11 of his 12 career games against Winthrop. He owns a .333 average (15-for-45) versus Eagles' pitching. But he has slumped a bit at the plate recently. In his last five games he has just two hits in 18 at-bats.
VMI outfielder Graham Sullivan has 10 hits in the last five games to boost his average to .343. First baseman George Picirilli comes in hitting .350.
Winthrop senior catcher Eddie Rohan is riding a 12-game hitting streak (22-for-43). He leads the team with a .444 batting average. Cam Walters has bounced back from a slow start. He has hit in seven straight games and has his average up to .283.
One area of concern is Winthrop's lack of extra base hits, especially home runs. The Eagles are last in the conference with 27 extra base hits and have managed just one homer in 496 at bats.
