Eight years ago Charlie Peters was lying in a Children’s Hospital bed in Omaha, Neb., hooked to tubes.
Out of the blue, about a dozen college students stopped by his room for a visit. They played make-believe baseball in the lobby. Charlie, a cancer patient, took his home run cut, then rounded the bases.
The college students were from baseball players from South Carolina in town for the College World Series.
Now 13, Peters served as one of the bat boys during South Carolina’s victory against Virginia on Tuesday. Peters has been a Gamecocks fan ever since that visit eight years ago.
