High school hoops roundup: Bearcats in finals of Y.C. Winborn Classic Basketball Tournament

The Rock Hill Bearcats made their way to the finals of the Y.C. Winborn Classic Basketball Tournament on Monday night with a resounding 78-43 victory over the Chester Cyclones.

Jamel Jones led the offensive assault with 16 points.

Rock Hill led 16-7 after one quarter, but a 26-point outburst in the second quarter led to a 42-22 lead at halftime. The Bearcats coasted from there.

The win improved the Bearcats to 7-0 and sent them into tonight's championship game against South Mecklenburg.

John Gore paced Chester with 18 points.

Gaffney Holiday Classic

The York Cougars got 17 points from Daurice Simpson and 12 from Reggie McClain to rout the Chesnee Eagles in the opening round of the Gaffney Holiday Classic.

Markell Castle and Luke Lancaster joined them in double figures with 10 points each. The Cougars led only 32-21 at intermission, but put the game out of reach with a 30-point scoring spree in the third quarter.

York will take on Gaffney in the finals tonight.

The Northwestern Trojans used a 17-6 second quarter advantage to establish a 33-17 halftime lead and cruise to victory over the Lugoff-Elgin Demons in the semifinals of the Y.C. Winborn Classic Basketball Tournament on Monday night in Rock Hill.

The victory sends the Trojans (9-1) against Olympic (Charlotte) tonight at 6:30 p.m. for the girls championship.

Kayse Branyon led Northwestern with nine points.
