Winthrop Eagles fall apart late in Big South loss to Campbell

There were a lot of things on the stat sheet that might give the impression that Winthrop had its way with Campbell on Tuesday night.

Problem was, the problems the Eagles had putting the visitors away were the kind you can't quantify.

Beset by breakdowns more mental than physical, Winthrop fell 54-51 to Campbell to fall back to .500 in the Big South.

"You can't tell me we can't win that game," Winthrop coach Randy Peele said.

Winthrop (7-12, 4-4 Big South) held the conference's leading scorer, Darren White, to a six-point night which his own coach referred to as "impotent."

The Eagles committed a season-low eight turnovers, while forcing Campbell into 18.

They limited the talented Camels to just seven points in transition, when they clearly came in looking to run.

But the reasons the Eagles lost were just as apparent.

Point guard Reggie Middleton was held scoreless. Andre Jones scored 17 points, with all but one coming in the first half. Winthrop scored just three points in the final four minutes.

But the things that will haunt Peele and the Eagles were the small things.

Jones missing two of three free throws midway through the second half. James Bourne missing a pair at the 2:03 mark, which could have brought it to within one. Backup Gideon Gamble cranking up a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds, even though his 3-pointer two possessions earlier got them to within two.

The Eagles lost due to thing like Matt Morgan not getting in position to foul Campbell's Eric Griffin (who was 0 for 4 from the stripe), allowing guard Lorne Merthie to go to the line instead.

"You're trying to steal the pass, and foul before they dribble," Peele said. "You don't have to have a 4.0 GPA to know you have to get him then and there. ...

"In a situation like that, you've got to be up in a guy, and Matt wasn't up in him enough."

Those kind of things allowed Campbell (12-8, 6-2) to slide out with one they may not have necessarily deserved.

Camels coach Robbie Laing decried the night of White and several other players, declaring them "AWOL."

"Hey, Darren was not himself on either end of the floor," Laing said. "He was anemic on defense, too. He just laid an egg tonight.

"It was some other guys who really played good basketball, and gave us a chance to bond a little as a team. It's good sometimes to have success without the guys who do it every night."

A 13-point Winthrop lead dissipated over the back half of the first half, and White put punctuation on it by dunking home his own miss, and even with Larry Brown's layup at the other end, the Winthrop lead was down to five points at 31-26.

Letting such an explosive team off the hook was frustrating to Jones, who knew that was when the game was lost.

"It was just a lack of maturity on our part," Jones said. "We're up early, shots are falling, and toward the end of the first half we were just shooting too fast, not getting good shots off. I mean, we were making them earlier in the night, so you kind of understand why.

"But you look back, and those were like fool's gold, because that's when they got back in."
