Maggie Turner was sitting in her room on Powderhouse Street watching television when she heard a loud noise Tuesday night.
"I thought it was firecrackers," she said, "but it shot about four or five times."
Those "firecrackers" turned out to be gunfire - gunfire that killed her neighbor, 41-year-old Elonia Ware.
Rock Hill police were called to Ware's duplex at 283 Powderhouse St. at about 7:30 p.m. on reports of gunfire, said Lt. Brad Redfearn. They found Ware dead of a gunshot wound just above her left eye, according to reports.
Ware had been sitting in a chair in her living room when multiple rounds were fired into the duplex, Redfearn said.
York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said Ware was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.
Two others were inside the home at the time - Ware's 20-year-old son and her 51-year-old boyfriend. They were not injured.
No motive established
While a motive hasn't been established, Redfearn said investigators do not believe the shooting was a drive-by or random. They believe the home was targeted.
This is not the first time shots have been fired into Ware's home.
On Dec. 2, Ware was in the duplex with her boyfriend, mother and young grandson when she heard at least three gunshots, according to previous police reports.
The bullets entered through the windows, causing about $300 in damage. No one was injured and police never caught the shooter.
Assailant still at large
On Tuesday, a K-9 unit responded but was unable to locate a track. Investigators were back at the duplex Wednesday morning.
Turner has lived on the street for about 60 years. She said Ware had been her neighbor for at least two years, and whenever she saw her they would say "hello."
"She was nice," Turner said.
Turner also heard gunfire in the December incident.
"It scares me," she said. "The killing over there, we haven't had that. The neighbors don't bother anyone. Everyone is nice."
Police are asking anyone with information to call the police department at 803-329-7282 or Crimestoppers at 877-409-4321.
String of killings
This is the third homicide in York County this year, the second in Rock Hill.
Last week, 64-year-old Alexander Hardin was found dead at his Orr Drive home. Police said he had been assaulted with some type of object and had been there for a few days. No one has been arrested in that incident.
On Jan. 5, Jackie Lashon Craine, a 34-year-old mother of three, was shot to death in Fort Mill. Police identified as a her ex-boyfriend, James Enrico Diago, 38, was charged with murder.
