Pizza acrobatics, fashion, food highlight event

Think you have the best Chocolate Chip Cake or meatloaf -- a recipe that keeps folks begging for more?

Challenge other cooks in Rejuvenate magazine's recipe contest, during the Rejuvenate Women's Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Baxter Hood Center on Anderson Road in Rock Hill. Wednesday is the deadline to submit recipes.

Attendees at the show also can sample dishes prepared by area restaurant chefs, watch fashion shows, shop for bargains on products, services and more and win prizes. There's even a pizza dough acrobatics demo, featuring a world champion. Entertainment will be by recording artist Rebecca Loebe.

Heather Patterson of Fort Mill didn't hesitate to enter the recipe contest. She submitted her recipe for Cicilian Mini Meatball Sandwiches -- fresh ground beef mixed with fresh organic parsley, buttermilk and of course, pine nuts and raisins.

The meatballs are coated in a homemade sauce with ingredients such as extra-virgin olive oil, shredded carrot, tomato paste and celery. Portions of the recipe were adopted from a dish served at a Brooklyn, N.Y., restaurant.

Patterson, 37, said the dish always gets an appreciative response.

"They love them," said Patterson, an Oklahoma native who has swapped Italian recipes with her friends in New York over the years. "I have people who ask me to teach them how to make them. They really like them a lot."

For the contest, Patterson plans to serve her mouthwatering meatballs with mozzarella cheese and fresh basil on a dollar roll. She said the meatballs can be served as an appetizer, on pasta, in lasagna or in spaghetti.

Patterson said they are a labor of love. "This is not a recipe you can do quickly," she said. "It looks a bit overwhelming, but it's a beautiful process."

Among others who plan to enter the recipe contest is Marie Bilbo of Rock Hill, who has submitted recipes for Orange Pineapple Coconut Cake and Chicken Salad Pie.

Judging for taste and presentation will take place at the show. First-, second- and third- place prizes will be awarded.
