Hank Williams' 'Your Cheatin' Heart' Named Greatest Honky-Tonk Song After His Death

A classic track released more than 70 years ago by one of the most beloved figures in country music history has been ranked the "Greatest Honky-Tonk Song Of All Time." The song, "Your Cheatin' Heart," was released days after its singer-songwriter, Hank Williams, tragically passed away.

Why Country Music Fans Named Hank Williams ‘Your Cheatin' Heart' the ‘Greatest Honky-Tonk Song of All Time'

In June 2025, Ranker updated its article that allows country music fans to vote on the "Greatest Honky-Tonk Song of All Time." The ranking named Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart" No. 1 by a significant margin. Interestingly, the second song on the ranking was another Williams track, "There's a Tear in My Beer." "Your Cheatin' Heart" has received other accolades over the years, including when Rolling Stone ranked it No. 237 on its 2024 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Arguably a perfect example of honky-tonk music's emotional core, "Your Cheatin' Heart" perfectly portrays the sorrow of lost love. Written by Williams about his own lived experience, the emotions that come with being betrayed ooze out of every syllable. It's such an iconic song that it has been covered countless times and has cemented itself as the bedrock of country music in a way that makes it feel like it always existed.

The Song Reached No. 1 After Hank Williams' Tragic Death

Given the massive legacy that Hank Williams left behind, it's staggering to think what he could have accomplished if he'd lived longer. Sadly, the beloved singer whose voice still speaks to the souls of listeners passed away on January 1, 1953, after suffering a heart attack in the back seat of a car.

Days after Hank Williams passed away, "Your Cheatin' Heart" was released. As The Boot has noted, the track would go on to hit No. 1 on the Billboard country chart and sell more than 1 million copies. It is a real shame that he never got to see how much his song spoke to people around the world.
