LAKE WYLIE -- Temperatures aren't the only things dipping in Lake Wylie.
Strickland's Frozen Custard, an Akron, Ohio-based ice cream company with 14 locations in four states, recently opened at Shoppes at The Landing in Lake Wylie.
"We're excited to be open in the community," store owner Andrew Puch said.
Puch originally had hoped to open the store in June during the summer's heat, but construction was delayed.
Even with falling temperatures, store manager Antwain Geffrard expects a warm welcome.
"I don't think the weather will be too much of a problem," he said. "We've got a lot of cold-natured people down here."
The old-fashioned soda shop will share space with another tenant in a 1,600-square-foot building. The menu includes 75 flavors handmade daily, along with milkshakes, cones, sundaes, banana splits, pies and more.
Along with its signature soft serve, Strickland's offers hot items such as hot beverages, hot dogs and soup.
"Ice cream is still the main draw, but we want it to be a family-friendly occasion together," Puch said. "We don't just want people to buy ice cream and leave."
A resident of The Landing, Puch wanted to create something special in his new hometown that reminded him of his former home in Akron. He also opened a store in Fort Mill.
"The Fort Mill store is so successful, and with us living in Lake Wylie, I thought this has to be the most natural fit," he said.
Strickland's began as a small town shop in Ohio with a special recipe and a machine that quickly freezes the ice cream while limiting the air whipped into the product. The company started franchising in 2002.
"I thought it was a phenomenal product, and I thought it was something worth investing in," Puch said.
Strickland's joins other businesses in Shoppes at The Landing including Goodyear and BB&T, as well as offices at Lake Wylie Business Centre and Lake Wylie Professional Center, which is under construction.
Strickland's is at 604 Nautical Drive, behind the Goodyear on S.C. 49.
Store hours are noon to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 1 to 9:30 p.m. Sundays.
