A 77-year-old York woman died this afternoon when the car she was riding inwent off an Interstate 77 exit ramp and struck a tree, authorities said.
Around 1:45 p.m., Ruth Wilson was riding with her husband, Billy, when heapparently lost control of his four-door Chrysler as he tried to exit ontoAnderson Road from the northbound side of the interstate, said Rock Hillpolice Lt. Jerry Waldrop.
Billy Wilson, 77, suffered chest pains just before the wreck, said YorkCounty Deputy Coroner Ev Amick. The couple was taken to Piedmont MedicalCenter and Ruth Wilson was alert and speaking to doctors when she arrived.
However, Ruth Wilson, of 5013 Billy Wilson Road, died in the emergency room,Amick said. Officials will know more about what caused her death after anautopsy tomorrow, he said. Billy Wilson remained conscious and alert at thehospital this afternoon.

No charges have been filed in the case, which police are stillinvestigating.
