Clinton Junior College cancels classes after death of student; second student in coma

Classes were canceled today at Clinton Junior College after one student was killed in an auto accident Saturday night and another is in critical condition in a coma. Four Clinton students were destined for the New Zion home of 20-year-old Ashley Makell. They did not fasten their seatbelts.

Makell swerved to avoid hitting a deer on Garners Ferry Road about one-half mile from the Sumter County line, according to Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol. At about 10:45, the car ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree on the passenger side. There were no indications of alcohol or excessive speed, McDougald said.

Unique Sharday Bullock, 20, of Bowie, Md., riding on the rear right passenger side, was taken to Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia, where she later died. Student Tamika Hall, 19, of Charlotte, seated beside her, was partially ejected through the left rear window and remained in critical condition. Makell and Jalania McCullough, 19, of Ladson were treated and released.
