Festival to help TV 'neighbor'

TEGA CAY -- Most of Charlotte knew her as the weekend weatherwoman on WBTV, but to many she was a neighbor.

So when Melissa Greer Polsky died earlier this year at 27 after a fight with neuro-endocrine carcinoma, neighbors began asking how they could help.

"There were quite a few of us who talked about it, and we just said let's do this," said Joy Jarrett. "This family is a member of our community."

Jarrett, co-event coordinator for Melissa's Dreams for Connor, has helped organize a family fun day benefiting the Polsky family, including husband, Roger, and son, Connor, who was born two months before his mother's death.

The fundraiser included an auction and gala Friday night and continues today at Runde Park in Tega Cay. Money raised will assist with medical bills from Melissa's cancer treatments and Connor's birth.

Cathy Blackwell, a Fort Mill resident who attended Dixie High School in Due West with then Melissa Greer, is working with Jarrett on the event.

Blackwell describes the late TV personality as outgoing, athletic and always up for a challenge, and perfect for the public persona brought on by her occupation.

"She was just very friendly, liked to laugh, very outgoing and always doing something," Blackwell said.
