Murder suspect arrested again

CHESTER -- A second Chester County murder suspect out of jail on bond has been arrested after police say they caught him trafficking more than $10,000 in drugs.

Kochese Gregory, 31, of 100 Caldwell St. was charged Friday with trafficking crack cocaine and failure to stop for a blue light, said Detective Scott Thompson of the Chester County Drug Unit.

Gregory's arrest comes after another man who was out on bond on a murder charge was arrested earlier this week after a busted drug deal.

Other charges are pending against Gregory, who was out of jail on a $25,000 bond stemming from an incident in 2004 in which police said he fatally hit Jose Cortos in the head with a pool cue, Thompson said.

Gregory fled to another state to avoid prosecution but was arrested and brought back to Chester, Thompson said.

Gregory bonded out of jail on Sept. 28, 2005, Thompson said. Nearly two years later, Gregory faced off with authorities again.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, Thompson and officials from the State Law Enforcement Division spotted Gregory as they conducted a drug investigation at the corner of West End Road and U.S. 321, Thompson said.

Gregory led police on a brief car and foot chase before he was apprehended, Thompson said. Gregory, who wore an ankle tracking device, was found in possession of 100 grams of crack cocaine and more than $3,200, officials said.

In addition to the murder charge, Gregory's criminal history reflects multiple drug-related charges, according to SLED. Other charges include resisting arrest and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

Gregory is not the first person facing a murder charge to bond out of jail, Chester County Sheriff Robby Benson said.

"Everybody's entitled to a bond, but if they do make bond and violate it, then the bond should be revoked," Benson said.

Gregory's arrest marks the third time since 2004 that a Chester County man charged with murder and out of jail on bond was arrested on other charges, Benson said. In addition to Gregory, DeMarcus Foster and Terry "Bike" Pendergrass also were arrested while out on bond on murder charges, Benson said.

Police say Foster shot and killed Theron Lee Crawford in February 2006. He was released on bond in March 2006 and was arrested earlier this week on drug and other charges.

Authorities believe Pendergrass strangled his pregnant girlfriend, Janet Jackson, to death in January 2004.

Gregory remained in custody Friday night at the Chester County Detention Center. Bond was not set.
