Welcome contest signs off today

CHESTER -- Today marks the final chance for Chester County residents to leave their mark on 10 county welcome signs.

The county supervisor's office already has received dozens of sign suggestions, everything from drawings on plain paper to posters to simple slogans.

The winner, to be chosen by a committee, will receive $100 and the glory of seeing his or her words posted on 4-by-8-foot aluminum signs placed at county entrances along major highways.

The idea for the contest came from County Councilman Alex Oliphant, who wanted to give some creative minds in the county a chance to show their talent.

The original deadline for the contest was Sept. 1, but because that was a Saturday, county officials decided to extend the time frame until 5 p.m. today.

Residents with sign designs need to bring them to the Chester County Supervisor's Office.

Here are some slogans that already have been submitted:

• Welcome to Chester County/Learning from the Past/Enjoying the Present/Planning for the Future

• Welcome to Chester County/Home Since 1790 -- and we're not goin' anywhere!

• Beautiful Places and Smiling Faces/Welcome To Chester/Home of the Cyclones

• Welcome to Chester County/I've Seen The Future, and It's Chester-Shaped

• Welcome to Chester County/Enjoy the Southern hospitality of a triple A community promoting Academics-Antiques-Art

• Welcome to
