York man dies in double-shooting

YORK - An 18-year-old York man died and another man was injured in a double-shooting on California Street Tuesday night, according to York Police Chief Bill Mobley.

Dawud Chester died at the scene of a single gunshot wound, interim York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said. An autopsy and toxicology tests are planned for later this morning.

The second man was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Medical Center suffering from gunshot wounds to a calf and near an ankle, Mobley said. The victim's identity was unavailable early today.

"This was a result of some sort of altercation between a group of individuals," Mobley said. "We're really trying to sort things out."

The shootings occurred about 8:30 p.m.

The police had identified a "person of interest" but had not interviewed him early today, Mobley said. No arrests had been made, and no weapon had been recovered, the chief said.

The shootings drew a crowd of more than 200 people to the scene, Mobley said. Several arguments broke out but no fights.

York County's SWAT team and the York County Sheriff's Office assisted with crowd control.

"We have officers out here monitoring to make sure this doesn't get out of hand," Mobley said.
