Rescue workers searched from sun up to sundown Sunday for a man who disappeared Saturday night while swimming with friends in the Catawba River.

The 22-year-old Hispanic man had gone fishing with friends about a mile north of I-77 in a remote area along the river, according to Cotton Howell, director of the York County Emergency Operations Center.

After fishing, the men went swimming, and the victim disappeared without calling for help, Howell said witnesses told officials.

"There are lots of rocks, holes, shallow spots, lots of deep spots in that area," Howell said. "Lots of debris to get trapped or tangled in."

There is no evidence alcohol was a factor, Howell said. The search is expected to resume today. Authorities will not release the victim's name until he is found.
