INDIAN LAND -- A midafternoon fire at a senior adult housing development gutted two Indian Land townhouses, authorities said.

No one was injured in the fire at Sun City Carolina Lakes in Lancaster County, said Carol James, Sun City community home association manager.

No workers were in the unoccupied townhouses at the time of the fire, she said.

"We are waiting for the fire department ... to give us the origin of the fire," James said.

Sun City, a 1,500-acre residential development, offers residents ages 55 and older a 40,000-square-foot, recreation center, an 18-hole championship golf course, walking trails and lakes for fishing, kayaking and canoeing.

The community has about 3,400 homes, James said.

Lancaster County Fire Service Deputy Director Darren Player was not available for comment Wednesday. However, the Lancaster County's Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 1:15 p.m.

A first- and second-floor townhouse unit were destroyed, James said.
