Out with the old, in with new at Winthrop

Crews worked Thursday to tear down the old Peabody Gymnasium at Winthrop University.

In its place, the school recently opened a new physical education and wellness center named in honor of alumnus Lois Rhame West.

The new $27 million center includes an indoor swimming pool, climbing wall and basketball courts. Built in 1915, Peabody housed a maze of narrow hallways, cramped offices and recreational courts.

Construction on a $22 million campus center, named after President Anthony DiGiorgio and his wife, Gale, is expected to begin after Peabody is demolished.
