Chester woman sentenced to house arrest after fatal wreck

WINNSBORO -- A Chester woman was sentenced to house arrest Thursday after pleading guilty to her role in a 2005 fatal hit and run.

Teresa Ann Jones, 41, of 1645 Woods Road on Thursday pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death during a Winnsboro court hearing, according to Deputy Solicitor Chris Taylor of the 6th Judicial Circuit.

Jones received a 15-year sentence suspended on five years house arrest, Taylor said.

Jones can leave the house for doctor's appointments, to attend church and care for her mother, who is sick, Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Goode said.

Timothy Rogers, Jones' attorney, could not be reached for comment. Taylor also declined to comment after court.

On May 14, 2005, Jones was driving north along S.C. 72. Herman Javan Caldwell, 51, also was driving north on a mo-ped when Jones struck him from behind, knocking Caldwell off the mo-ped, according to an arrest warrant.

Caldwell died the next day in a Charlotte hospital.

As part of her sentencing, Jones must wear an electronic monitoring device and pay for the service, according to court testimony.
