Winthrop to offer new teaching degree

Winthrop University will begin offering a Master of Arts in Teaching in early childhood education in spring 2009.

The program is targeted toward non-education majors who want to become teachers of young children. Graduates of the program will be prepared to teach preschool through third grade.

The board of trustees approved the new degree program last week.

About 20 students are expected to be enrolled in the program before it starts next year.

Local and state education agencies have increasingly stressed the need for more early childhood education.

Filing date changed for local elections

The dates to file for the upcoming local elections have changed.

Interested candidates for county council, coroner, solicitor, sheriff and other county offices can file with their political party between noon March 16 and noon March 30. March 30 is a Sunday.

The change, from March 17 to March 31, comes after a state Attorney General's opinion requested by the State Election Commission, said Wanda Hemphill, director of York County Registration and Elections.

Democratic and Republican primary elections will be held June 10.
